Nokia 808 PureView for $599.99 at Amazon US

This is a third party seller and there are only two in stock, but Amazon US has the Nokia 808 PureView for just $599.99 now. That’s equivalent to about £316/€400. Amazon UK still has this priced quite high at £474.99, with Amazon Germany at €547.

Unboxing : Nokia Purity HD, Cyan Monster with Nokia N9 (Huge Gallery)

So, third unboxing, second Monster for the day. This is the official Nokia Purity HD headsets, in Cyan. This arrived just as I finished recording the unboxing for the Beats, but the latter was a replacement so I had some experience with it already.
With this post, I’ll leave it as an unboxing for now, and I’ll get back to it in about a week for some real thoughts. It’s quite a bold attention grabber of a headset, especially in Blue/White/Magenta. Very comfy, very light, almost feels like you’re not wearing it at all.

Thanks Nokia Connects for the trial (I think I still called them WOM in the video ). There are 46 pictures in the gallery, but here are some I’ve selected.

Accessories: Nokia Play 360 Speaker

I know these have been out for a while, but I hadn’t seen too many reviews of it. Thanks to Nokia Australia’s PR Agency, I was able to get one to trial and bring you a review on. I have a video that re-iterates everything I say in this post so if you prefer to watch a video (and hear the audio), scroll down to the bottom, or you can keep reading. The choice is yours.

The Play 360 comes in Black, White and Blue. (We just need Pink and it completely compliments the N9 and Lumia 800 range.) The speakers are equipped with Bluetooth and NFC and for the size the audio quality is outstanding. I was skeptical that it would sound good, considering most other speakers I have used sound tinny, mainly with high pitched or bass intensive music.
I demo the speakers with higher pitched music (Adele), bass intensive music (Skrillex), R’n'B/Hip Hop (Labrinth) and Pop (Don Omar). Although these variety of genres and music styles aren’t all demonstrated over the same means (Bluetooth/NFC or AUX Cable), the speaker performs roughly the same, and the sound coming from the device is still amazing.
The Speaker has good battery life, and according to Nokia specs, can run for up to 21 hours. Pretty impressive in my opinion given the size of the speaker. As shown in my video, spinning it around, the audio quality and volume stays the same (except for the top, as the sound is emitted straight out and not in a circular path).
Sadly, I only had the one speaker and couldn’t demo the surround sound capabilities of having two in conjunction with one another. I would suggest if you want to buy one, try it out for yourself, but I doubt you’d be disappointed.
It does have a price tag you’d expect for a iPod docking station (AUD$150) and for me, it is worth it.

Accessories: Colourful Nokia Portable Charger sticks, Nokia DC-16

More cool Nokia accessories!
This is the Nokia Universal Portable USB Charger DC-16. Basically it’s a pocket portable charger. I’ve got some from other manufacturers (before Nokia began making their own) and they’re so useful! If you know you’ll be using your phone heavily for a long period of time and that might be quite away from a charging source, then something like this would come in handy. e.g. travelling or video recording for long extended amounts etc.
The Nokia Unversal Portable USB Charger DC-16 (Oh Nokia, why no memorable name) is an unconventional design, it’s like a stick of dynamite or a big long battery.
It comes in Nokia’s usual four bright colours, blue, pink, black, and white and comes with it’s own short microUSB cable that matches the colour of the battery pack. Thank goodness it looks like a thick cable as often, they might come in a weak retractable cable that breaks should you look at it the wrong way.
I might show you my other portable chargers tomorrow to see what they’re like. Quite important is the amount of charge it holds – for something of this size, Nokia has managed to pack 2200mAh. They say that’s enough for 2 cycles (though most likely will depend if your phone has zero charge, what’s being used etc).
  • 23.3 mm x 23.3 mm x 120 mm
  • 75g
  • LED charging status indicatorPower indicator key
  • Fast charging with 950 mA output < quite high for a tiny device.
  • Up to 3 months standby time with up to 75% capacity

Accessories: Colourful Nokia USB Cables, A-190CD

OK, just after the last post, I saw more Nokia accessories.
I’m not sure if these are new but they are new to me. You can see that the Nokia USB cables (Standard black) now come in all Nokia colours – blue, pink, white (and black). There’s something else that looks like it’s one of those retractable cables but it’s a cable tidy, I think, for rolling the cable around? I thought the last pic was the wall plug attachment but no, that’s the cable when it’s completely tidy.
As a long time Nokia customer, an odd thing I’ve noticed is the gradual improvement of their USB cable styles. They just look and perform nicer and the most recent one from N9/800 work with my USB portable charger (which I’ll demo tomorrow) . They’re certainly nicer than other USB cables I’ve had from other manufacturers.

Video: Nokia BH-221 Bluetooth Headset Fuchsia Unboxing (Pink)

The Nokia BH-221 was one of the cool new accessories Nokia had at MWC, you might have missed the initial post on it.
Here’s a surprise quick unboxing of that stereo bluetooth headset  by , he likes it though he’s a little embarrased by the colour (it’s pink, not matching his cyan 800 which he compared a while back with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus). He says he’s going to play with the BH-221 for a week and come back with a review.
What new Nokia accessory caught your eye at MWC?

Lumiappaday #130: Lumia Clock demoed on the Nokia Lumia 800

I’ve had to rerecord something else for today’s Lumiappaday so this one’s a short demo of a very simple app.
It’s pretty much just a clock in funky Lumia stylings, the colours of which can be changed quite easily. The app looks neat for what it is, and better when the advert intermittently disappears. I do wish that the transition animation when selecting colours could be sped up (and more like the transition at homescreen if possible? Though this is not something you’d be changing often).
There’s a stopwatch function which is cool as the digits are all large and clear to see. There are more functional stop watches at marketplace but this was never meant for that.
(During the week, I have another clock app to review that’s quite a bit more functional). It would be dead awesome if the AMOLED capable Lumias somehow had sleeping screen with this (perhaps not with the seconds to save battery).

Accessories: Nokia 808 PureView Picture Frame, + Could 4K video recording be possible by 808?

Well, not really but Gerii who tipped this in pointed out that this would make a good companion for your Nokia 808 PureView as it could show the pictures from the 808 at 1:1.

This features an 8K screen, 7680 x 4320 or 33MP.
Now whilst 145″ might be impractical for everyday use, 8K is certainly where we’ll be heading in screen resolution. This reminds me of a post I intended to make some time ago where James Burland talked about the possibility of the Nokia 808 recording 4K video.
There’s no one quite like James Burland when it comes to speculations about technology. Whether it be about Apple or more appropriately for us, Nokia, if you’ve been following him for a while, he’s freakishly always on the money.
James, Mr B has long been passionate about mobile imaging, and for a very, very long time, Nokia has been at the forefront in driving innovation in imaging forward. Here were some links I dug up from his archive, some very, very smart speculations (well I thought I had more links but seem to have lost that draft).
On 4K video, James says it’s about Future Proofing. We’re always hearing now how some phones ‘aren’t doing 1080p’ as if it’s now a standard, but so many years ago, that would be considered crazy on a phone. If you jumped back in time to 2006, I’m sure you’d also get asked why on earth you’d consider recording 1080p or why even you’d have HD screens on a 4.5″ device. James reckons 4K displays will be the norm soon enough.
Imagine if screens would eventually have the same pixel density as the latest HD phones. That would be some insane screen (requiring some insane powering) but it wouldn’t be impossible.
Cheers everyone for the tip

Accessories: Monster Dr. Dre Beats Pro Unboxing/Review

Got a couple more unboxings to go today (actually filmed yesterday). This is the first of the Monster branded headphones, the ones they’re probably most known for now, Beats. These come in various ranges, with the actual headphones starting at the Solo, Studio and then Pro.
To see what the fuss is all about we have these to try. I actually had the black one only last week, but contrary to reviews it’s not quite built like a tank as one of the hinges just became really lose, flopping around like a broken arm. With the replacement we also picked the alternative ‘white’. Oddly they seem a lot more comfortable than the black one (they didn’t squeeze my ears so much). They are heavy, a lot heavier than say the BH-905 or the Purity that you’ll see in the next post.

This was meant to be more of an unboxing but I thought I’d share some more info since I’ve had a pair of these for over a week and I’d like to concentrate more on the Purity HDs next week (and possibly some Play 360s).
Packaging/Box
Clean, premium looking. The sleeve houses a box that comes in either red (for the black Pros) or white which folds open to reveal the accessories.
They feel solid, definitely weighty. Build wise, as mentioned I thought they would be super solid but for some reason, one of the hinges on my first pair was faulty and flopped around. I’ll get back to you on how this feels in a week. I’m even more super careful with this one now (though I already was after my error with  my first pair of BH-905).

Accessories: Nokia Play 360 Blue, NFC speaker unboxing, demoed with Nokia N9 (+Gallery).

I’ve been itching for one of these for a long, long time but Nokia UK/Nokia Connects didn’t (and still don’t) have any trial units. Fortunately Nokia Australia had one for Michael – you might have seen his post back in February:
That was based on two weeks of use.
Well, last week I got contacted by Katie who’s working on something called ‘Best British Bloggers’ and wanted us to take a look at some accessories from www.phones4u.co.uk, one of the major UK mobile phone retailers. Thanks Katie!
I was so excited to see the Play 360 on their list. I’ve only had a brief try of these myself at Nokia events, and yesterday at 6am, the postman brought this mystery package in (I wasn’t sure what it could be at the time as I was expecting another similarly sized box).

Project N955 – Turn your N9 into an N950, sort of (w/ Video)

Just saw this on TMO during a Uni break. There is this thing called Project N955. The aim of the project is to turn an N9 into an N950. It isn’t the most elegant, or perfect solution, but it works.
HtheB posted his process as follows;
I bought a cheap iPhone bluetooth slide-case, and a cheap N9 case on eBay.
I unscrewed the case to get rid of the iPhone case, to just have the bluetooth keyboard with the slider.
Then, I just made holes in the cheap N9-case and screwed the slider on it.
Turn on the device, pair them and the result: N9 with a keyboard!
So essentially, all this “mod” is, is swapping out the iPhone case on a BT keyboard, for the N9 case. There are still drawbacks, like being able to hide the VKBD while using the BT keyboard, but that is being worked on. There have been posts in the past (don’t remember where I saw them), where the community was trying to get these keyboards made specifically for the N9. At the moment, this is the best solution.
He has posted several photos as well as a video. Take a look below.
